Central American Minors
Providers in Houston, Texas working with unaccompanied minors - join us for monthly collaboration!
The CAM Working Group pulls together community members and organizations in the Houston Area to proactively support new arrivals and navigate an array of supportive services and practices aimed at strengthening individuals and families. The group meets monthly and communicates regularly to support each other and the wider community by sharing resources, troubleshooting difficult cases, educating and training others about the needs of the community and seeking creative solutions to newcomer needs.

Sarah K Howell is the school social worker at Las Americas Newcomer School in Houston ISD, manages the social work department at Houston reVision and is the founder of STAR (Survivors of torture, asyleesand refugees) Counseling and Consultation and STAR Support, a nonprofit. Sarah co-facilitates the Central American Minors working group in Houston, TX and is an advocate for forced migrant trauma and comprehensive trauma informed practices. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania.

Arlene is a career-long social worker, with more than ten years of direct social work practice, a BSW, MSW, and several social work certificates. She is currently a doctoral candidate obtaining her Ph.D. in Social Work at the University of Houston. Arlene's work is uniquely informed by experiences that she has encountered with clients, agencies, and communities as a social worker both nationally and internationally. Her interests pertain to programs and interventions dedicated to improving the lives of Latinx youth. Through this goal, Arlene became involved in the Central American Minors (CAM) work group when she relocated to Houston, Texas in 2019 with the vision of creating safe and welcoming spaces for migrant families.

Lizzy Bowen, LMSW has been involved in social services for over 10 years, earning both BSW and MSW degrees. She is currently a clinical social worker at Legacy Community Health and in the process of obtaining her LCSW license. Lizzy’s passion for working with immigrant populations started with field experiences and coursework during her social work education. Lizzy’s ongoing dedication and advocacy efforts for this population led her to join CAM where she continues to devote time to improving the lives of immigrant youth and their families.
